Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
What is the smart lock?
A smart lock is an electromechanical lock that is designed to perform locking and unlocking operations on a door when it receives a prompt via an electronic keypad, biometric sensor, access card, Bluetooth, or Wi-FI from a registered mobile device.
What happens if a smart lock battery dies?
Yes, most smart locks come with a manual key backup that allows you to unlock the door with a physical key, even if the battery is dead. If your smart door lock is unavailable, you can change the battery with a fresh one or use an emergency power source to unlock the door.
Do you need a key for a smart lock?
Your smart lock will contain electronic components allowing it to connect to your home internet either via Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or Z-Wave. This is what gives you remote access to the lock via an internet-enabled smart device. Like all locks, smart locks operate with the use of a lock and a key.
Can you install smart locks yourself?
You can install a smart lock yourself; most of them do not require professional installation. However, the process is relatively difficult and may require tools.
How long do smart locks last?
With that in mind, most smart locks last for about 6 to 12 months on a single set of fresh batteries or a fresh charge. Network-connected and Wi-Fi locks can be an exception to this rule, though, often lasting a few months at a time before requiring a change of batteries.
